Fill in the gaps and restore function with dental implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots placed in the jaw to replace missing teeth. These artificial roots provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable replacement teeth tailor-made to match your natural teeth. Implants have been shown to dramatically improve the quality of your smile by complementing the aesthetics and function of your teeth.

Dental Implant Procedure

First, the patient’s bone structure and density will be analysed to determine its suitability to hold the implant post. If the teeth have fallen out a long time ago, bone loss is likely to have occurred. In this case, regeneration of the bone is warranted before the implant can be placed. Once Dr Anand deems you a suitable patient, a titanium dental implant will be inserted into your jaw bone. This will act as the root of your new tooth and will be covered by a dental implant crown. The fixture will ensure stability and the crown will ensure a desirable cosmetic appearance.

A more permanent solution to tooth loss

Your permanent solution

Dental implants from Extreme Dentistry are designed to be permanent and durable so your smile can last a lifetime. They can provide:

  • Improved stability in the mouth
  • Relief from biting pressure and irritation
  • Enhanced speech

Aesthetically pleasing

Dental implants are the ultimate tooth replacement solution as they mimic the look of your natural teeth.

Functional

They act and feel like real teeth. Speaking may also become easier after you replace missing teeth.

Beneficial to your diet and health

You can eat and chew normal foods without pain or irritation.

Maintain bone structure

Dental implants can help maintain your bone structure and support your facial tissues. They can reduce or eliminate bone atrophy, which causes “shrinkage” or facial cosmetic changes. Additionally, they help the jaw to exercise and maintain its strength. Without tooth replacement, the bone in the jaw will atrophy.

An investment in the future of your oral health

Dental implants have been in mainstream dentistry for about 30 years, therefore there are many different dental implant brands available. Dr Anand mainly uses Ankylos, a brand from Germany. This is one of the oldest brands on the market with 25 years of production and success behind them.

Dental Implant FAQs

Certain requirements must be met in order for you to be a suitable candidate for dental implants. For example, you must be in good oral health and have sufficient jawbone density. Heavy smokers and seriously ill patients like immunocompromised or uncontrolled diabetics patients may need scrutiny before implants can be considered.

This depends on your point of view. If you want a long-term, proven solution to replacing missing teeth, and you don’t mind the price tag, then dental implants can definitely be worth it. Ask the person who has not had any teeth and then he had implants … to him his life changed. Dental implants can have a significant impact on one’s quality of life, sense of well being and not forgetting the ability to eat the foods one couldn’t enjoy without teeth.

The implant itself, baring accident, injury or illness can last a lifetime. The health of the implant is only as good as the rest of the mouth. If you allow the rest of the mouth to deteriorate then one should expect the same of the implants. The restoration attached to the implant, however, typically lasts between 7 to 15 years.

Usually, a dentist makes the recommendation for an implant, not every missing tooth in the mouth has to be replaced by an implant as is commonly believed. It is best to seek a professional opinion on this question before making a decision.

The going price of a dental implant is $4500-$8500. An implant is made up of various components. The implant itself is an artificial root, in a straight forward single tooth replacement the fees would be towards the bottom end of the scale, whilst a highly aesthetic case with the need for bone and soft tissue augmentation then the cost would be towards the higher end. Each case differs and needs to be assessed; a full treatment plan and costing would then be given.

Any type of surgery or foreign object placed in the body poses a set of risks. However, when placed by an experienced professional, dental implants are a safe and effective way of restoring your smile if you find yourself in the position of losing a tooth.

After you have had a dental implant placed, you will likely need to take a day or two off from work to recover. Any swelling should subside after a few days. Initial healing should take roughly 7 – 10 days, however, it takes roughly 3-6 months for the implant to completely integrate into the bone and be ready for the restorative portion of your treatment.

Dental implants are artificial posts inserted into the jaw bone to hold up a false tooth. If there are multiple missing teeth, implants can be spaced apart to hold up a set of grouped teeth which are referred to as a bridge or denture.

Implants can improve the aesthetic appearance of a smile and can also improve oral health and function. Overall, they can help to improve quality of life, provide the ability to eat well, speak well, and increase overall feeling of wellness.

Risks include, but aren’t limited to: infection, nerve damage, sinus problems or implant failure.

Dental implants can fail early in the treatment or slow, progressive bone loss around the implant can create problems later down the track.

The most common problem with this treatment is not concerned with the implant itself, but with the false teeth placed on top. They are less flexible than natural teeth so it is not uncommon for the crown to chip as the restoration ages, which may require maintenance or replacement.

While the crown itself will not decay, you need to ensure your gums remain healthy as they are directly attached to the bone. If your gums become diseased or change in health status, the bone surrounding the implant may consequently suffer and cause problems such as gum disease. Peri-implantitis is a severe form of gum disease which can lead to the total destruction of the bone around the implant.

Implants have shown to last a lifetime in many individuals with the exception of the few who’s bodies reject or don’t tolerate or accept the implants. Good oral hygiene has to be maintained. Dental implants end up following the same fate as your won natural teeth should your health and body fail, so as long as you’re healthy they should last you a lifetime.

Everybody is different; surgery is taken under local anesthetic. After a successful administration of local anesthetic, the patient will feel no pain.

If an implant fails in the treatment or healing process up to one whole year from the day of the procedure, we will redo the whole procedure at no additional cost.

Any service required between one and two years will amount to half the cost of what the patient would normally be charged. Between 2-5 years, the cost will be ¾ of what is normally charged.

This guarantee is only valid if you return for 3-6 months check-ups of your teeth as recommended, so any potential problems with the implant can be dealt with before big problems occur.

You should try and eat soft foods to avoid aggravating the surgery site. Once healed, you can return to your normal diet. However, you should avoid biting and chewing hard foods as these can cause damage to the replacement tooth.

Implants solve the need to have missing teeth replaced like for like, implants also solve the need for stabilizing and fixing dentures which otherwise would not stay firm in the mouth.

Dr Anand will look for a range of criteria including:

  1. Is the patient in good health? There are a few risk factors for dental implant failure which include patients who smoke or have diabetes.
  2. What is the patients oral condition? The remaining teeth, gums, and jaw need to be stable to place dental implants. If the other areas of the mouth have dental decay, broken teeth or gum disease, this will need to be treated before the implants can be placed.
  3. Can the patient maintain a healthy mouth? The success of implants can often depend highly on the ability of the patient to keep their teeth and gums clean.

Anyone can have an implant provided they have decent health; age is not a contraindication.

These answers are generalized answers to the questions asked. Dr Anand would assess everyone individually for his or her own personal needs. A full treatment plan would be made to suit the individual. These are just general answers and may not be applicable to you or may be proven wrong over time in the future.
