The dentofacial makeover can alleviate various signs of ageing as well as enhance the aesthetic of your smile
Extreme dentistry in Darwin can provide the dentofacial makeover to smooth out the signs of ageing, while simultaneously creating a more beautiful or aesthetically pleasing smile. We have used this procedure on a variety of patients, with one of our most successful results being our patient named Eva. Eva required a combination of dermal fillers, and anterior veneers to enhance her smile. The overall procedure was performed over a year in various stages, with the end result being a significant improvement. There were multiple areas addressed during the all-encompassing dentofacial makeover including:
- Forehead lines
- Glabella (in between eyebrow) and bunny lines (on nose)
- Crow’s Feet
- Deep naso-labial fold
- Smokers lines (lip creases)
- Lip volume
- Dimpled Chin
- Downturned angle of mouth
- Marionette lines
- Gummy smile
Stage 1: Dermal fillers
Fillers were first placed to smooth out the lines in the forehead, glabella, crow’s feet and bunny lines. There was significant improvement in the suppleness of the skin and appearance of wrinkles.

Eva’s dimpled chin was also smoothed out with fillers , creating a more refined chin area.
Eva’s smile was also compromised by the tooth wear and high rising upper lip, which exposed her gummy smile, so the team at Extreme Dentistry in Darwin lowered the upper lip using cosmetic injections. However, Eva felt that this restricted her smile (as seen below) so we decided, not to repeat the procedure again and over 2 months she was able to raise her lips high again satisfying her smile.

Cosmetic injections where applied to the masseter and temporalis muscles in order to alleviate stiffness / tension which can contribute to the pain experienced from temporomandibular joint disorder. This disorder can cause a number of issues including migraines and headaches.Cosmetic injections have been proven to be a successful treatment for this disorder, and in this case worked very well.
Stage 2: Anterior Veneers
After letting the effects of the lowered lip wear off , attention was diverted to Eva’s teeth. In order to further enhance the appearance of Eva’s smile we applied composite resin veneers to mask the tooth wear and discolouration. The veneers enhanced the look of Eva’s teeth by giving her that ‘pearly white’ sheen.
Stage 3: Dermal Fillers to the lips and Peri Oral areas
While the smile looked good, the lips still rose quite high on smiling and attention was then diverted to the lip morphology and the height / volume of the lips. It was decided an attempt will be made to increase the volume of the lips to reduce the amount of gums showing on smiling. Dermal fillers were applied to the lips and around the mouth to:
1. Increase the vertical height of lips
2. To increase the volume of lips or make lips look more “ fuller “. With age, the lips tend to thin out.
3. To correct the down ward turned smile by giving more support to the lips and corners of the mouth (picture below).
Close attention was placed on defining the shape of the upper lip, creating a cupids bow and ensuring the lip stick could be applied to the full length of the lips. The deep Naso-labial folds were also treated with dermal fillers.
The downward turned smile was addressed by utilising a triangle injection pattern at the melomental fold of the lips as can be seen below.
Immediately after treatment both the upper and lower lip looked significantly defined and volumous, with a less downturned edge.
The final results gave a very distinct lip line, as well as improved volume and overall appearance. As is evident in the final results, Eva’s gummy smile was practically eradicated, her teeth looked a wonderful white because of the composite resin veneers and her lips look volumous, and her top lip maintains its plumpness as she smiles. The forehead, crows feet around the eyes and the well defined chin all added to the overall result .
